Sow Mazzoletti tetraploid ryegrass at 20–25 kg/ha during April–May in the Gympie region (March sowing possible in cooler hinterland areas). Apply 60–100 kg/ha MAP or DAP as starter fertiliser at sowing to establish strong root development and early vigour. Graze using the anchor test—pull a plant at grazing height; if it remains firmly in the ground, it is ready for grazing. Implement rotational grazing by removing stock at the 2.5–3 leaf stage and allowing adequate recovery time between grazings to rebuild carbohydrate reserves. Tips: Mazzoletti is a late-maturing tetraploid variety ideal for extending winter–spring feed in SE Queensland. For best results, oversow into run-down summer pastures to fill winter feed gaps without competing with existing tropical pastures. Avoid sowing Italian ryegrass alongside modern ryegrass varieties, as Italian ryegrass is too competitive; sow alone or with vetch for best establishment.
