Drill a hole through your timber post at the height you want to run your wire or tape, then screw the insulator in firmly so it sits flush against the post. Thread your electric fence wire or tape through the insulator's slot and pull it tight to your next post. Make sure the insulator is tight enough that it won't spin or slip under tension, but don't over-torque it or you'll crack timber posts. Tips: Position insulators on the side of the post facing away from stock so animals can't push the wire against the post and short it out. Check your insulators every few months in Queensland's heat and UV — they can become brittle and crack over time, which kills your fence efficiency fast. Keep the insulator clean and dry; dirt buildup and moisture between the insulator and post will cause gradual energy loss to earth.
