Slide the insulator onto your post and secure it firmly—screw-in types thread directly into timber or steel posts, while pinlock types clamp over the post. Run your wire or tape through the insulator channel and ensure it sits snugly so it won't slip under tension. Check that the insulator is oriented so the wire sits in the deepest part of the groove, keeping maximum distance between the conductor and the post. Tips: High strain insulators cop the most tension on your fence line, so make sure you're using the right ones for your end posts and corners—they'll save you replacing broken insulators every season. Keep them clean of dirt and salt buildup, especially if you're near the coast or running stock through muddy country, as grime can create a path for energy to leak to earth. Don't overtighten screw-in insulators on steel posts or you'll crack the ceramic; hand-tight with a quarter turn more is enough.
