Drive the gudgeon post into the ground using a post driver or fence rammer, making sure it's vertical and sits firmly. Slide the through-post attachment over the gudgeon to secure your electric fence wire or tape at the desired height. Tighten any fasteners securely so the post can't shift under tension from livestock pushing against the fence. Once installed, check that the connection to your energiser is clean and the wire sits properly in the attachment to maintain good electrical contact. Tips: Galvanised posts last longer in Queensland's wet season and salty coastal areas, so don't cheap out on corrosion resistance if you're near the ranges or coast. Pre-mark your post spacing with paint before you start driving them in — saves time and keeps your fence line straight, which matters when you're trying to control stock movement. Check your through-post attachment hasn't worked loose after heavy rain or when cattle have leaned on the fence; a loose connection kills your voltage dead.
