Drive the gudgeon post into the ground using a post driver or maul, ensuring it's vertical and firm. Slide the 16mm galvanised through-post over the gudgeon until it sits at your desired height—typically 1.2 to 1.5 metres for cattle or sheep fencing. Once positioned, tighten the locking mechanism securely so the post won't shift under wire tension or when animals push against it. Tips: Always check the ground isn't too hard or rocky before driving the gudgeon in—if you hit solid rock, move a metre or two along the fence line rather than bending the post. Keep spare gudgeons on hand because they're cheap insurance; a bent one mid-paddock will cost you more time than having spares ready. Make sure your through-post is perfectly vertical before final tightening, as a wonky post will cause uneven wire tension and potential fence failures.

Common Questions

What is a gudgeon and what's it used for?

A gudgeon is the pin that attaches to your gate post to allow the gate to hang and swing. This Gallagher gudgeon is a through-post style, meaning it goes right through the post for a solid connection.

Will this gudgeon fit my gate?

This gudgeon has a pin diameter of 16 mm and a shaft length of 250 mm. You'll need to check your gate hardware to make sure these dimensions match what you need. If you're not sure, give us a ring on (07) 5482 1692 and we can help you sort it.

How long will it last?

All Gallagher steel gates and gate hardware, including this gudgeon, come with a 5 year warranty.

What makes this gudgeon stronger?

The pin is positioned directly on top of the thread, which transfers the weight throughout the thread rod. The threads are also roll-threaded rather than cut, which makes them stronger and ensures consistent quality.
