Mark out your hinge positions on the gate post and frame — typically one near the top and one near the bottom for a standard farm gate. Clean the welding surfaces with a wire brush to bare metal, then position the socket boss on the post and the pin boss on the gate frame. Tack weld first to check alignment, then run a full bead around each boss to create a solid joint. Let the welds cool naturally before hanging the gate. Tips: Get your measurements spot-on before you start welding — a gate hanging crooked will bind and wear the hinge out fast. Use a set square to ensure the bosses are perfectly vertical and parallel to each other, or you'll spend years fighting with a gate that won't swing straight. Clean off all flux and wire brush the welds after they cool, as rust will start immediately on bare steel in our Queensland humidity.
