Screw the oval ring latch housing directly into your gate post using the pre-drilled holes as a guide. Attach the 350mm chain to the ring and secure it to the opposite post at a height that allows the gate to swing freely without binding. Make sure the latch mechanism moves smoothly before you load stock near the gate, as any sticking will cause problems when you're in a hurry. Tips: Keep the latch clean and free of mud and debris—a quick spray with water and a dry cloth every few months will stop it seizing up. Position the chain so it's not twisted or kinked, as this wears it out faster and makes the gate harder to operate when you're tired at the end of the day. Screw the fitting in firmly but don't overtighten, as this can strip the threads in timber posts over time.
