  1. Floren Bluegrass

     vigorous, tufted, warm-season perennial grass (Dichanthium aristatum) suited particularly to tropical and subtropical Australia. It is well adapted to heavy red and black clay soils with neutral to alkaline pH, and tolerates drought, flooding, waterlogging and salinity. 

    Main characteristics

    • Type: Warm-season, perennial, tufted grass.
    • Growth: Most productive from summer through early winter.
    • Grazing: Highly palatable and capable of tolerating heavy grazing once established.
    • Soils: Particularly suited to heavy clay soils, especially neutral to alkaline clays, but can also grow on clay loams and loams. 
    • Moisture: Tolerates periodic flooding and waterlogging and has good drought tolerance once established.
    • Salinity: Relatively salt tolerant.
    • Rainfall: Recommended for areas receiving at least about 650 mm annual rainfall, unless irrigation is available. 
    • Production: Under adequate nutrition, established stands can produce around 9–11 tonnes of dry matter/ha. 
    • Feed quality: Young, leafy plants can contain up to about 12.5% crude protein, with low oxalate levels. 

    Planting rate

    There are two useful recommendations, depending on how Floren is being sown:

    DLF's current recommendation is 6–10 kg/ha when sown as a pure stand and 2–4 kg/ha in a mixture.

    Best planting time

    Floren is a warm-season grass, so planting should be timed for the warmer part of the year, when there is reliable soil moisture.

    For Queensland, this generally means planting with the wet-season opening, rather than into cold or drying soil. The key is to have:

    • warm soil temperatures;
    • good moisture in the seedbed;
    • a clean, relatively weed-free seedbed;
    • good seed-to-soil contact; and
    • enough follow-up moisture for seedlings to establish.

    FutureBeef notes that prepared seedbeds with good soil moisture give young pasture seedlings the best opportunity to establish before weeds and competing grasses use available moisture. 

    In practical terms: for much of southern and central Queensland, I would target spring to early summer, immediately before or at the start of reliable rainfall, with the exact window moving earlier in warmer northern districts.
