FEEDRIGHT RHODES HAYLAGE QPD 16KG
FeedRight Rhodes Haylage is a premium, partially fermented Rhodes Grass forage designed to provide horses with highly digestible fibre, steady energy and support for a healthy digestive system. It is an Australian-made product produced by a family farming business in Queensland's Lockyer Valley.
Key benefits
- Premium Rhodes Grass forage — made from freshly harvested Rhodes Grass.
- Partially fermented — the grass is wilted and then sealed in an oxygen-free environment, allowing beneficial fermentation to occur.
- Highly digestible — FeedRight states that its haylage can be up to 90% digestible, meaning more of the available nutrition can be utilised by the horse.
- High in fibre — provides the forage-based fibre horses naturally require.
- Low in starch — FeedRight states that its Rhodes Haylage contains less than 1% starch and has an NSC level of less than 10%.
- Slow-release energy — the fibre-based energy supply is intended to provide sustained energy rather than a sharp energy spike.
- Supports hindgut health — the fermentation process introduces beneficial microbial activity and supports the horse's natural hindgut fermentation.
- Low-dust forage — its moist nature makes it a useful alternative to dry hay for horses where dust is a concern.
- Palatable and easy to eat — the softer, moist texture can be particularly useful for horses that struggle with or dislike dry hay.
- Suitable for different classes of horses — FeedRight says it can be used for horses in regular work, young horses, older horses and performance horses.
How the fermentation works
FeedRight Rhodes Grass is cut and allowed to wilt before being tightly packed and sealed. With oxygen excluded, naturally occurring beneficial bacteria ferment the sugars in the grass, producing lactic acid and helping preserve the forage. The fermentation process also produces compounds such as short-chain fatty acids that are involved in hindgut health and energy metabolism.
Feeding
Because FeedRight is more digestible than conventional dry hay, the manufacturer recommends starting with approximately half the amount of hay normally fed, then adjusting according to the individual horse, workload, body condition and overall ration.
Introduce it gradually rather than making a sudden change to the diet. Horses unfamiliar with fermented forage may take around 7–14 days to fully adapt to it.
Storage after opening
FeedRight is a living, partially fermented product, so it needs more careful handling than ordinary dry hay.
After opening:
- Keep it cool, dry and out of direct sunlight.
- Keep the haylage covered so it does not dry out too quickly.
- Avoid leaving it exposed to heat and humidity.
- Feed opened product relatively quickly. FeedRight gives approximately 3–7 days in summer and 7–10 days in winter, while its newer storage guidance recommends around 4–5 days.
