Mount the BD22 in a dry location near your fence line, ideally on a post or in a weatherproof box. Connect the positive terminal to your fence wire and the negative terminal to a good earth stake driven at least 1 metre into damp soil, away from the fence line. Install fresh batteries and check the indicator light is working before turning on, then test the fence voltage with a tester before letting stock near it. Tips: Keep your earth stake in genuinely damp soil—if your paddock dries out, the fence loses effectiveness fast, so water around it in dry spells. Vegetation touching the fence line will drain power like nothing else, so slash regularly underneath and along the wire or you'll find the energiser barely holding a charge. Battery models work best for temporary or remote fencing; if you're running permanent boundary fences, you'll spend a fortune on batteries compared to mains or solar.
