Run your earth stake at least 1 metre into damp ground, away from your fence line, and use proper earth cable to connect it to the energiser. Connect your live fence wire to the positive terminal and test the fence with a voltmeter before letting stock in—aim for 4,000-5,000 volts minimum depending on vegetation load. Tips: Keep your fence line clear of long grass and weeds; they'll bleed voltage and reduce your effective range, especially in wet conditions. Check your earth connection regularly—a poor earth is the most common reason a fence stops working properly, and it matters more than the joules you've got. For dense scrub country, you'll get better results running a second earth stake in parallel if your first one's in sandy or dry soil.
