What does Veggie Mate do?

Veggie Mate is intended to help produce healthier, more resilient vegetables and herbs. According to Earthlife, it can:

  • Improve plant resilience to adverse growing conditions.
  • Help vegetables and herbs resist pest and disease pressures.
  • Improve post-harvest shelf life.
  • Encourage earthworm activity.
  • Discourage nematodes.
  • Supply a broad spectrum of minerals and trace elements.
  • Support beneficial soil biology.
  • Provide plant-available silica, which is particularly useful for strengthening plant growth.
  • Improve results when incorporated into the soil rather than simply left on the surface.

Where can it be used?

Veggie Mate is suitable for all types of vegetables and herbs and can be used in:

  • New vegetable gardens
  • Established vegetable beds
  • Raised garden beds
  • Vegetable patches
  • Herb gardens
  • Vegetable seedlings
  • Transplanting
  • Pots and containers
  • Different soil types

It is particularly useful when preparing a new vegetable bed or when planting individual seedlings.

Application rates

General fertilising:
600 g/m² — approximately 6 handfuls.

Most planting situations:
600 g/m².

Transplanting:
Add approximately 1 teaspoon to each planting hole.

Problem soils or areas:
800 g/m² minimum — approximately 8 handfuls.

Pots:
Approximately 1–2 handfuls per 300 mm pot diameter.

How often should it be applied?

For leafy vegetables, Earthlife recommends applying Veggie Mate approximately every 6–8 weeks.

For fruiting vegetables, Earthlife recommends approximately every 3–4 weeks. Earthlife also recommends using Fruit Blend alongside Veggie Mate for fruiting vegetables, at 100–200 g/m² every 3–4 weeks.

Using it with seedlings

For vegetable seedlings, Earthlife recommends having the garden bed prepared beforehand and incorporating soil-conditioning products into the bed. When planting the seedling, approximately one teaspoon of Veggie Mate can be placed in the bottom of the planting hole, followed by watering after planting.

Important advantages

One of the major advantages of Veggie Mate is that it is a slow-release, natural mineral product that is designed not to burn foliage or roots when used according to directions. It can be incorporated into the soil for faster results or spread around established vegetables and watered in.

Earthlife also states that Veggie Mate is a Certified Allowed Input for organic growers and contains no animal waste products.
