Earthlife Lawn Blendis a completelawn fertiliser and mineral soil conditionerdesigned to improve both the grass and the soil beneath it. Rather than relying on a high dose of nitrogen for a quick green-up, it provides a broad range of minerals, trace elements and beneficial soil microorganisms intended to support stronger roots, thicker growth, improved soil structure and greater lawn resilience.
What it contains
Earthlife lists a typical analysis of:
Nitrogen (N): 4.0%
Phosphate (P): 3.0%
Potassium (K): 2.5%
Calcium: 11.3%
Magnesium: 2.0%
Plant-available silica: 18.5%
Sulphate: 5.5%
Iron: 1.8%
Plusaround 60 other minerals/trace nutrients
More than30 beneficial species of soil micro-floraare also described as part of the product.
It includes natural rock phosphate and minerals such as zinc, copper and boron, rather than being simply an NPK fertiliser.
What Lawn Blend is designed to do
1. Feed the lawn
The NPK provides a relatively moderate nutritional feed. The 4% nitrogen content is deliberately much lower than many conventional high-nitrogen lawn fertilisers. Earthlife's rationale is that excessive nitrogen can produce rapid, soft growth that is more susceptible to environmental stress and pests.
2. Improve soil structure
Lawn Blend is intended to condition the soil as well as feed the grass. Earthlife says it can help improve soil structure, reduce compaction and increase water penetration and moisture-holding capacity.
3. Encourage stronger roots
The mineral and nutrient combination is intended to encourage a deeper and more robust root system. Better-developed roots allow the grass to access water and nutrients more effectively and can improve resilience during heat, drought and heavy use.
4. Produce thicker, softer grass
Rather than pushing predominantly upright growth with excessive nitrogen, Lawn Blend is marketed as encouraginglateral/runner growth. This can increase the number of leaf blades and help produce a denser, softer lawn.
5. Improve wear resistance
The calcium, silica and broader mineral profile are intended to support stronger plant tissue. Earthlife specifically markets Lawn Blend for lawns exposed toheavy foot traffic, with stronger growth and improved recovery from wear.
6. Support soil biology
The product contains beneficial soil micro-flora and is designed to create an environment conducive to earthworm activity. Earthworms and soil microorganisms can contribute to nutrient cycling and improved soil conditions around the root zone.
7. Help with moisture management
By improving soil structure and root development, Lawn Blend is intended to improve the lawn's ability to access and retain moisture, potentially reducing watering requirements.
8. Help manage soil pH and sodium
Earthlife says Lawn Blend has properties similar to gypsum and dolomite in that it can helpreduce sodium levels and adjust/maintain soil pH, while improving soil friability.
Suitable for all lawn types
Earthlife states that Lawn Blend is suitable forall turf varieties, including established lawns and newly laid turf. Its FAQ specifically confirms that it can be used onSir Walter, and says it contains no urea, manure or blood-and-bone that could potentially burn the lawn.
Application rates
Lawn situation
Rate
Seed lawns
50 g/m²
Newly laid turf
Minimum 100 g/m²
Established lawns
Minimum 100 g/m²
Problem areas
Minimum 150 g/m²
For problem areas, Earthlife also suggests aerating and applyingGarden Matefirst at a minimum of 300 g/m².
For a normal established lawn,100 g/m²is therefore the standard starting rate. For example:
50 m² lawn ?5 kg
100 m² lawn ?10 kg
150 m² lawn ?15 kg
200 m² lawn ?20 kg
How often should it be applied?
Earthlife's current product page recommendsat least three applications per year, with additional applications if necessary. Its product fact sheet has also stated four applications per year, so following the current product label/instructions supplied with your particular bag is sensible.
Earthlife recommends watering it in, with the fact sheet noting that application ahead of expected rain can produce a good response.
New turf
For new lawns, Earthlife recommends usingGarden Mate before laying the turf, followed by Lawn Blend on top:
Apply Garden Mate at300–500 g/m²before laying the turf.
Lay the new turf.
Apply Lawn Blend at100 g/m²over the turf.
Water it in thoroughly.
The aim is to encourage the new turf to establish deeper roots, reduce establishment stress and improve its ability to tolerate foot traffic and adverse conditions.
For existing lawns
On an established lawn, Lawn Blend functions as both afertiliser and soil conditioner. At the recommended minimum of 100 g/m², it supplies nutrients and minerals while aiming to encourage lateral growth, improve root development and maintain soil health. Earthlife recommends top-dressing/application as required to maintain the lawn.
