Digit grass(Digitaria didactyla), also known asblue couch or Queensland blue couch, is a low-growing, spreading perennial grass. It spreads by stolons/runners and can form a dense ground cover once established.
Planting time
For Queensland and other warm, summer-rainfall areas, digit grass should generally be planted whensoil temperatures are warm and reliable moisture is available.
Best period:late spring through summer, approximatelyOctober–February.
Plant after good rainfall or when irrigation is available.
Avoid sowing into cold, dry soil because establishment can be slow.
A well-prepared, weed-free seedbed gives the best establishment.
Seed rate
The recommended planting rate for digit grass is approximately:
2–4 kg of seed per hectare.
A practical starting rate isaround 3 kg/ha, adjusting according to seed quality, soil preparation, moisture and competition from weeds.
Seed quality is important. The amount ofpure live seed (PLS)can be calculated from the seed's purity and germination percentages: PLS % = Purity % × Germination % ÷ 100.
Establishment requirements
Digit grass performs best with:
Good soil moisture at planting.
A firm, fine seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact.
Minimal weed competition during establishment.
Shallow sowing—avoid burying the small seed deeply.
Follow-up rainfall or irrigation until seedlings are established.
