DEHORNING WIRE 12MT LONG ROLL SHOOF 220064 at a glance

Dehorning wire has been used for many years for removing mature or semi mature horns.

This special wire is made of steel with very fine saw teeth.

A short piece is locked into the special handles and then simply used as a saw around the horn base, as close to the skull as possible.

Change wire after 2 or 3 horns.

Use hot iron or Dehorning Packing to stop bleeding.

Allow animal to stand quietly afterwards.

Do not mix immediately with other stock.

Also useful for de-tusking boars.

Cut the required length of dehorning wire from the roll for your procedure, then thread each end through the hole or clamp in the dehorning wire handles (sold separately). With one handle in each hand, position the serrated wire at the base of the horn and use a consistent back-and-forth sawing motion to remove the horn. Clean the wire before each use by wiping with a disinfectant solution, and use a fresh section of wire for each animal to prevent cross-contamination. Tips: Dehorning causes pain and stress — consult your veterinarian about appropriate sedation and pain management protocols before undertaking this procedure. Under Queensland animal welfare legislation, pain relief is required for dehorning cattle over 6 months of age. Keep the procedure area clean and have wound treatment products ready immediately after. In warm weather, fly-strike prevention on the wound site is important.
