  1. Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a deep-rooted, cool-season herb commonly grown for grazing, forage, soil improvement, and as part of pasture mixes. It establishes best in fertile, well-drained soils and can provide productive forage through warmer periods when managed correctly.

    Seed description

    • Seed: Small, elongated, brown to dark-brown seed.
    • Seed size: Approximately 600,000–700,000 seeds/kg, depending on variety and seed lot.
    • Germination: Best when seed is placed shallowly, as chicory seed is relatively small.
    • Plant type: Perennial broadleaf herb with a strong taproot and good drought tolerance once established.
    • Forage quality: Generally high in protein and mineral content, making it useful in livestock pastures.

    Planting time

Planting time depends on climate and moisture availability:

    • Temperate areas: Sow in early spring or early autumn, avoiding periods of severe frost or heat.
    • Warm/subtropical areas: Autumn is often a good planting window because soil moisture and temperatures are more favourable.
    • Plant when there is reliable soil moisture and enough time for seedlings to establish before extreme heat or frost.

    Seeding rates

Typical rates depend on whether chicory is sown alone or in a pasture mixture:

    Purpose

    Approximate sowing rate

    Chicory monoculture

    3–6 kg/ha

    Chicory in pasture mix

    1–3 kg/ha

    Chicory + other forage species

Adjust rate according to the companion species

For pasture establishment, 1–2 kg/ha of chicory seed is often sufficient when combined with grasses and/or legumes, because excessive chicory can dominate the mixture.

    Planting depth

    • Sow very shallowly: about 5–10 mm deep.
    • Ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
    • Avoid burying the seed too deeply, which can significantly reduce emergence.
