Callide Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana)

Callide is a warm-season, perennial Rhodes grass commonly used for cattle grazing and hay. It is a tetraploid, late-flowering type, with good palatability, strong summer growth and good tolerance of grazing. It performs best where annual rainfall is roughly 600 mm or more, or where irrigation is available.

Planting time

For Queensland and similar subtropical areas:

Best time: early spring, once the soil has warmed and there is reliable moisture.
A broader planting window is approximately October to late February, provided suitable rainfall is expected.
Avoid planting into cold, dry soil. Callide is less cold-tolerant than some other Rhodes types, so establishment is better when temperatures are rising.
Seed should be placed on or very close to the soil surface—generally no deeper than 5–10 mm—on a fine, firm seedbed, followed by rolling for good seed-to-soil contact.

The appropriate rate depends on seed type, soil, moisture and whether it is being planted alone or in a mixture.

Establishment and first grazing

Callide can establish quickly when moisture and temperature are right. Depending on conditions, it can generally be grazed at around 4–6 months after planting.
