What It's Used For

The Shoof Milk Train 2 Place Calf Feeder is a portable, modular milk feeding system designed for rearing young calves. It allows two calves to feed simultaneously from individual compartments, making it ideal for dairy operations, beef properties, and small farms managing orphan or poddy calves. The feeder holds a total of 10 litres across two four-litre compartments, supplying a controlled and consistent feed for each calf through Excal Big Softy teats that closely mimic natural suckling. Whether you're running a large dairy or just raising a couple of poddy calves, the Milk Train is a practical solution for efficient and hygienic calf feeding.

Fill each compartment with the appropriate quantity of milk or milk replacer — up to four litres per compartment. The intake elbow and valves are supplied standard, so ensure these are correctly fitted before filling. Hang the feeder securely on a timber or pipe rail using the built-in hooks, which are suitable for rails up to 38mm in diameter. Position the teats at a comfortable height for the calves to suckle naturally.

If you need to feed more than two calves, the Milk Train is designed to be modular — simply join additional units together using the dovetail ends, building the feeder out to whatever length suits your setup. Each unit is 42cm long, making it straightforward to scale up as your mob grows. The central handle makes it easy to carry the feeder between pens or paddocks.

After each feeding session, disassemble the teats, elbow valves, and any joined units. Rinse all components thoroughly with warm water immediately after use to prevent milk residue from drying and building up. Wash with a suitable dairy equipment sanitiser, rinse clean, and allow all parts to air dry completely before the next use. Store in a clean, dry location away from direct sunlight when not in use.

Tips for Best Results

• Always check that the intake elbow valves are properly seated and the teats are firmly attached before filling — this prevents leaks and ensures each calf gets a consistent feed.
• Rinse the feeder with warm water straight after every use. Milk residue dries quickly and can harbour bacteria, so don't leave cleaning until later in the day.
• When joining multiple Milk Train units together, make sure the dovetail connections are fully engaged before hanging on the rail to keep the whole setup stable while calves are feeding.
• Inspect the Excal Big Softy teats regularly for cracks, wear, or deterioration and replace them as needed to maintain good flow and hygiene.
• Store disassembled units in a clean, shaded area — prolonged UV exposure can degrade plastic components over time.
• Position the feeder at the right height for your calves — teats that are too high or too low can discourage feeding or cause calves to take in excess air.
