The Shoof M1 Rail-Hang Calf Feeder is designed for feeding milk or milk replacer to young calves, making it a practical choice for dairy and beef operations. The feeder hooks directly onto a rail, fence, or pen divider, keeping it securely in place while calves feed without supervision. With a 5-litre capacity and the well-regarded Excal 'Big Softy' no-leak teat, it's built to reduce mess and wastage while encouraging natural suckling behaviour in young stock.

Fill the 5L feeder with warmed milk or colostrum (37-39°C) and hang securely on the rail system at calf shoulder height. Ensure the teat is properly attached and the flow rate allows the calf to suckle naturally without excessive speed. Clean and sterilise all components thoroughly between each feed to prevent disease. Tips: Always prioritise colostrum in the first 6-12 hours after birth—feed at 10% of bodyweight (e.g. 4L for a 40kg calf). Monitor teat flow to ensure calves must suckle actively to stimulate natural feeding behaviour, and never rush feeds. Tips for Best Results

• Position the feeder at the calf's natural suckling height — too high or too low can cause the calf to gulp air and lead to bloating or poor feeding habits.
• Clean and sanitise all components after every single feed, paying close attention to the teat and intake valve where milk residue can harbour bacteria quickly in warm Queensland conditions.
• Check the grip teeth on the rail-hooks regularly to make sure they haven't worn smooth — a feeder that shifts or drops during feeding is a hazard and a frustration.
• When not in use, store the feeder and teat components out of direct sunlight to extend the life of the plastic and rubber parts.
• Introduce young calves to the teat by gently guiding their mouth onto it for the first couple of feeds — once they get the idea, most take to it readily.
