What It's Used For

The Springer-Magrath Calf Feeder Fluid Drencher is designed to make administering fluids to newborn and young calves straightforward and stress-free. It's an essential piece of kit for dairy and beef cattle operations, particularly when dealing with newborns that need colostrum in those critical first hours, or scouring calves that require electrolytes to stay hydrated and recover quickly.

This unit does double duty — it works as both a stomach tube drencher and a teat feeder, covering two of the most common feeding scenarios on a cattle property. The 2-litre flexible bottle paired with a 45cm probe allows fluids to be delivered directly to the calf's stomach when the animal is too weak or unwilling to suckle. The included suckling teat and cap assembly simply swaps on when you want to encourage natural feeding behaviour instead.

As a Stomach Tube Drencher: Fill the bottle with the required fluid — colostrum, electrolytes or other prescribed liquids — up to the 2-litre maximum. Attach the 45cm flexible probe securely to the bottle. Restrain the calf safely, then carefully pass the probe into the calf's mouth and down the oesophagus into the stomach. The moulded tube and knob are specifically designed to prevent malpositioning into the lungs — always confirm correct placement before delivering fluid. Once positioned correctly, gently squeeze or collapse the flexible bottle to deliver the fluid at a controlled rate.

As a Teat Feeder: Remove the probe and fit the suckling teat cap assembly to the bottle. Fill with colostrum or milk replacer and allow the calf to suckle naturally from the teat.

Cleaning and Maintenance: Rinse the bottle, probe and teat thoroughly with warm water immediately after each use. Disassemble all components and wash with a suitable animal-safe detergent, then rinse well and allow to air dry completely before storing. Regular cleaning after every use will extend the life of the equipment and prevent the build-up of milk residues that can harbour bacteria.

Tips for Best Results

• Always administer colostrum to newborn calves as soon as possible after birth — ideally within the first two hours — to maximise immunity transfer. This drencher makes it easy to get that first feed into a calf that won't suckle on its own.
• Before passing the probe, warm the fluid to body temperature (around 38–39°C). Cold fluids can cause additional stress to a sick or newborn calf.
• Take your time when passing the probe and never force it. The flexible design and moulded anti-misplacement knob help guide correct placement, but slow and steady is always the safer approach.
• Rinse the bottle and all components immediately after use — dried milk or colostrum is much harder to clean and can harbour harmful bacteria that put calves at risk.
• Store the drencher disassembled in a clean, dry location out of direct sunlight to prevent the flexible materials from degrading over time.
• Keep a spare suckling teat on hand — teats can wear with regular use and having a backup means you're never caught short during a busy calving season.
