What It's Used For
The Excal Calf Feeder Teat, Cap and Valve Kit is designed for feeding newborn and weak calves that need assistance getting started with suckling. The kit centres around the well-proven Excal Fast-flow teat, which features a built-in non-return valve to help calves latch on and feed with minimal effort — particularly useful for calves that are struggling or slow to suckle in their first hours of life. The 2-litre bottle makes it a practical nursing bottle for colostrum or milk replacer feeds on dairy and beef properties alike.
Fill the 2-litre bottle with colostrum, whole milk or milk replacer as required. Attach the teat and cap securely, ensuring the non-return valve is correctly seated in the back of the teat. Offer the teat to the calf, guiding it gently into the mouth if needed. The non-return valve assists weak or newborn calves by making it easier to draw milk through the teat without excessive effort.
If the calf is suckling too fast and gulping air or milk, cover the air valve on the bottle with your finger or thumb to slow the flow rate down. This gives you control over feeding speed to suit the individual calf's strength and condition.
After each feed, disassemble the teat, cap, valve and bottle completely. Rinse all parts thoroughly in warm water immediately after use to prevent milk residue from drying and harbouring bacteria. Wash with a suitable bottle or teat cleaning solution, rinse clean, and allow all components to air dry before reassembly or storage. The kit includes a replacement air valve for the bottle, so keep it on hand for when the original shows wear.
Tips for Best Results
- For newborn calves, warm the milk or colostrum to approximately body temperature (around 38–39°C) before feeding — calves are more likely to suckle readily from a warm teat.
- If the calf is gulping or showing signs of bloat risk, use your thumb or finger to cover the air valve and reduce flow rate during the feed.
- Clean the teat, cap and valve after every single feed — milk residue builds up quickly and can become a source of scours-causing bacteria, especially in warm Queensland conditions.
- Store the disassembled, dry kit in a clean, covered container between feeds to keep it free of dust, flies and contamination.
- Keep the spare air valve that comes with the kit in a safe place — it's a small but important part that's easy to lose and worth having ready when you need it.
