Sow Butterfly Pea (Milgarra) between October and December, placing seed at 10–20 mm depth into warm, moist soil. The recommended rate for most situations is 7–10 kg/ha (FutureBeef Butterfly Pea book); lower rates of 2–4 kg/ha are cheaper initially but need time and careful grazing management to build the plant population. Butterfly pea's rhizobium is Group M (strain CB756 – the siratro group) – inoculate seed with Group M before sowing (not the cowpea 'Group CB' inoculant). Milgarra is a perennial tropical legume that performs on sandy and lower-fertility soils and, once established, is drought tolerant and long-lived. Combine with tropical grasses (Rhodes, signal, kikuyu, setaria); allow 6–8 weeks establishment before grazing and water during establishment if dry. Guide only — confirm the inoculant and rates with your supplier and a local agronomist. TGRM (07) 5482 1692.
