Fence post spacing — a quick guideLine posts (star pickets) carry the wires between your strainer posts. As a rough starting point: crop or exclusion fence about 5 m, sheep about 4 m, cattle about 4 m on flat ground and about 3 m on hilly ground. Space them closer together for more wires, larger or pushier stock, and undulating country. Let your strainer posts do the anchoring at ends, corners, gateways and any change of direction or slope.

Drive the 210cm black heavy star post to 600mm depth using a post driver, leaving approximately 150cm above ground. The taller height suits horse paddocks, deer fencing, or any application requiring extra rail height. Attach wire at the pre-formed notches, working from the ground up to keep tension even. Tips: Straight driving matters more on taller posts — any lean amplifies over the full 150cm of above-ground height. Set your end and corner posts first and run a string line before driving intermediates. Black posts show dirt and rust staining more visibly than galvanised, so inspect and touch up regularly in wet seasons.

Common Questions

What makes Stockpost Black different from a standard fence post?

Stockpost Black is rolled from high grade steel and finished with a black bituminous coating — not paint — which gives it a tough outer barrier that withstands the test of time. It also has innovative ground and centre marks to help you line up your fence quickly and easily, plus precision hole alignment for uniform spacing from the first post to the last.

Will this post drive in straight?

Yes. Stockpost Black has uniformly cut end-points designed to drive in straight and easy, and the innovative ground marks help you get the fence line right from ground level.

What's the coating made of?

It's finished with a black bituminous coating, not paint. This provides a tough, long-lasting outer barrier.

How do the hole markings help?

The precision hole alignment and spacing marks ensure you can attach rails uniformly across all your posts, so your fence stays straight and consistent from start to finish.
