Wizard forage oat from Barenbrug presents a significant improvement in yield over other forage oat varieties currently in the market whilst retaining leaf rust resistance in most situations.

Wizard has an erect early growth habit, medium plant height, high tillering and fine leaves and stems.

Speed to initial grazing is quick, similar to Genie.

With normal planting time (March – April), Wizard has medium plant maturity being
5-7 days earlier to anthesis than Genie.

Stem and leaf thickness of Wizard is slightly finer than Genie.

It also tends to be higher in tillering and have better recovery from cutting and grazing.

Wizard offers growers a complete package of high yield potential, medium / late maturity with excellent recovery in the winter months.

Wizard is susceptible to a new pathotype of leaf rust.

If this strain is not present, Wizard will appear resistant.

Key features:

Sets new benchmark for yield in forage oats, 9% over Genie and 15% over Drover and Taipan.
Good early growth similar to Genie and better than Aladdin.
Excellent recovery from grazing and cutting.
Currently resistant to most Australian pathotypes of leaf rust.
Medium maturity

Key benefits:

Strong competition against weeds early.
More feed for longer periods, both early and through winter.
Bred, trialled and selected in Queensland and northern New South Wales for performance and local adaptation.
Improved return on investment compared to other varieties.
Fast to first graze.
Huge forage yield benefit. More feed all season = greater animal production.

Sow Barenbrug Wizard forage oats between late March and May at 60-100 kg/ha in the Gympie region. Sow at 35-70 mm depth and apply a nitrogen and phosphorus starter fertiliser to improve establishment. First grazing or cutting is typically ready 6-8 weeks after sowing; graze to a minimum of 12 cm to protect the growing point, and avoid grazing on waterlogged soils to prevent pugging. Tips: Wizard is a forage oat variety bred for high dry matter production and quality in winter-spring grazing systems. Graze before head emergence to maintain digestibility. Oats can be grazed multiple times or cut for hay or silage.

Common Questions

What makes Wizard forage oats different from other varieties?

Wizard sets a new benchmark for yield in forage oats—it's 9% higher than Genie and 15% higher than Drover and Taipan. It has an erect early growth habit, medium plant height, high tillering and fine leaves and stems. It's also bred, trialled and selected in Queensland and northern New South Wales for local performance.

How quickly can I get my animals grazing?

Wizard is fast to first graze, with speed to initial grazing similar to Genie. With normal planting time in March–April, it has medium plant maturity and good early growth that competes well against weeds.

Does Wizard recover well after grazing or cutting?

Yes. Wizard has excellent recovery from grazing and cutting, and tends to be higher in tillering than some other varieties, which supports regrowth through the winter months.

What about leaf rust resistance?

Wizard is currently resistant to most Australian pathotypes of leaf rust. However, it is susceptible to a new pathotype of leaf rust. If that strain is not present in your area, Wizard will appear resistant.
