Sow BARENBRUG FORAGE SORGHUM LUSH between October and January when soil temperature is consistently 20–25°C into good moisture. Use a sowing rate of 8–12 kg/ha drilled in rows 50–75 cm apart, or 10–15 kg/ha if broadcasting. Sow at a depth of 20–40 mm — critical for germination, as sowing too deep will cause emergence failure. Do not graze until plants reach 60–80 cm tall (6–8 weeks after sowing) to avoid dangerous prussic acid (HCN) accumulation in young growth. Tips: Always allow vigorous growth before grazing — young sorghum, frosted plants, and drought-stressed regrowth contain dangerously high prussic acid levels that can kill stock rapidly. After frost, wait 5–7 days minimum before grazing. Avoid grazing wet, lush sorghum to prevent bloat; ensure animals have access to other roughage. Expect multiple grazings through summer and autumn with rapid regrowth between grazings until the first frost ends the season.
