Stretch the wire tight between posts using a come-along or similar tensioning tool — you want firm tension but not so much it'll snap in cold weather. Space your posts at 1.5 to 2 metres depending on ground conditions and stock type. Make sure barbs are facing outward and your wire sits at the right height for your livestock: roughly 90cm for cattle, 60cm for sheep. Tie off securely at each end post and check tension regularly over the first few weeks as the wire settles. Tips: Wear heavy gloves and long sleeves when handling — 2mm barbed wire will cut you without warning. Don't try to stretch this wire too tight when it's cold; let it warm up in the sun first or you risk it snapping on you. Check your fence line regularly for rust or damage, especially after wet weather, and keep a spool of repair wire on hand for quick fixes.
