Unroll the wire carefully and secure one end to your starting post with at least three staples, driving them at a slight downward angle. Run the wire along your fence line, keeping it reasonably tight and parallel to the ground, stapling every 30cm or so to timber posts. Once you've reached the end post, pull the wire taut with fencing pliers, secure it firmly with three staples, then cut off any excess with wire cutters. Tips: The 1.80mm gauge gives you a good balance between strength and workability for general cattle and sheep work—it won't snap on you like lighter wire but handles easier than the heavier 2.50mm if you're doing long stretches solo. Keep your tension consistent along the run; too loose and stock will push through, too tight and you'll risk the wire snapping in hot weather or if a post shifts. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling barbed wire, as a slip with 500 metres of this stuff will catch you badly.
