AYRFORD POST HOLE SHOVEL WITH WOODEN HANDLE A640131 at a glance

Ideal for long thin digging operations such as trenches and drains, this post hole shovel has a compact square mouth profile which is great for small spaces.

A long timber handle adds good manoeuvrability, and the blade is firmly fixed to the handle ensuring it stands up to rugged on-site use.

Ideal for digging post holes, drains, cleaning and trenching.

Position the shovel over your marked post location and push the blade into the ground with a firm downward stamp on the footrest. Work the blade down by pulling the handle back and forth in a rocking motion to loosen soil and create the hole. Lift and remove loose soil between passes until the hole reaches the required depth (minimum 600mm for standard fence posts). Tips: Wet the ground the day before post hole digging in dry clay conditions — makes a significant difference to how easily the blade penetrates. Keep the blade sharp for cleaner cuts and less effort; a blunt shovel blade loses cutting performance quickly in rocky or compacted soils. For high volumes of post holes, a mechanical post hole digger (auger) saves significant time and physical effort.
