Description

Equivac 2 in 1 is used in the prevention of tetanus due to Clostridium tetani and in the control of strangles due to Streptococcus equi subspecies equi in horses.

Equivac 2 in 1 is one of a range of Equivac products available for tetanus and strangles treatment and control.

Equivac 2 in 1 provides a more practical and economical means of vaccinating simultaneously for both tetanus and strangles than purchasing and administering two separate vaccines.

Prevention of tetanus:

A single dose of Equivac 2 in 1 given to an unimmunised horse at the time of wounding or surgery may not prevent tetanus. For short-term prevention of tetanus, Equivac TAT should also be used. See entry for Equivac TAT.

Combined Active-Passive Protection:

Equivac 2 in 1 can be administered simultaneously with Equivac TAT. A separate needle and syringe should be used for each product and administration should be on opposite sides of the body. If initiating a primary course the second dose of Equivac 2 in 1 should be administered 3 to 6 weeks later.

Zoetis offers a guarantee against tetanus infection if horses are vaccinated by veterinarians with Equivac 2 in 1 in accordance with the guidelines of the Equine Infectious Diseases Advisory Board and the dose is registered with the health4horses.com.au product registry.

Side Effects:

Localised swelling may occasionally develop at the site of injection. On rare occasions systemic signs have been observed following vaccination against strangles. This appears to occur when horses have been sensitized to Streptococcus equi by exposure to infection or when they are incubating the disease. Horses which show an abnormally severe reaction following vaccination should not receive further doses of vaccine containing a strangles component for twelve months. Tetanus immunisation should be completed with Equivac T. Local reactions are more evident if the vaccine is injected subcutaneously. Provided the injection has been carried out aseptically, any swelling which occurs at the site of inoculation should resolve spontaneously.
