Description

Furneys Vets Bone & Big Head Compound is a palatable, flavoursome blend of calcium sources readily available to the horses blood stream. It is a combination of chelates, proteinates and compounds that replace the calcium that is not available from subtropical grasses such as Kikuyu, Setaria, Buffel, Pangola, Green Panic & Pigweed.

Does Your Horse Have Big Head Symptoms can include swollen head, staggering gait, dull coat, shifting lameness, bunny-hop canter, twitching muscles in both legs and face. Big head is a calcium deficiency disease induced by a diet with a persistent lack in calcium, excess in phosphorus and/or imbalance to phosphorus ratio.

Horses can store calcium and phosphorous in their bones when grazing in normal pastures or when supplemented with grains or commercially prepared feeds. These pastures, grains and feeds provide calcium and phosphorous along with the nutrients required for the usual activities of a horse.

However, horses that graze in pastures dominated by subtropical species such as Kikuyu, Buffel, Pangola, Green Panic and Pigweed can suffer from a calcium inbalance. Horses require a ratio of 2:1 calcium to phosphorous in their diet. These studies revealed that subtropical grasses contain Oxalic Acid in the leaves and stems and when horses graze continuously, Oxalic poisoning can occur.
